Since embarking on a long awaited solo career in 1999, John has recorded five solo albums and has become a diverse musician and songwriter active in the Nashville community and beyond. John’s most recent album, Arkansas, was released in February 2018. Originally inspired by the music and legacy of the legendary Mississippi John Hurt, the project expanded to encompass other artists and styles that represent the dawn of American popular music from the early 1920s and 1930s. Assembling an band of all-star Nashville musicians, Oates shines a light on music from America’s past long before the birth of rock ‘n’ roll. Fresh interpretations include the Emmett Miller classic “Anytime” from 1924 as well as the Jimmie Rodgers tune, “Miss the Mississippi and You,” from 1932. Reimagined traditional Delta, country blues and ragtime selections salute legendary artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Blake.
While the show will mainly be songs from Oates' latest album, Arkansas, he is known to play an '80s pop song or two!
Opening Act: Adam Ezra
It’s difficult to impart the roots-steeped, road-trippin' essence of the ADAM EZRA GROUP (AEG) into a single word, but frontman Adam Ezra nonetheless keeps one in mind as something of a mantra: community.
Community is epitomized by a belief that has long doubled as a mission statement for the group: namely, that making music together is itself a form of grassroots organizing, capable of nothing less than changing the world. A tireless touring outfit, AEG is constantly on the road, often devoting their time to local charities and always going out of their way to connect with fans. They are creating a powerful, inclusive community around AEG shows that is beginning to be compared to a social-movement as much as a traditional music fan-base. It's this dedication to fans that inspired the annual "Get Folked Concert Tour" in which Ezra ventures solo/acoustic to the homes of at least 40 fans in as many days and almost as many states to play house concerts throughout January and February.
