A psychotic socialite attempts to force an amateur tennis star to comply with his theory that two complete strangers can get away with reciprocal murders. Bookended by first- and last-act fairground sequences -- the former, with its lurid silhouettes in the Tunnel of Love, is a one of the director's finest set pieces -- Strangers On A Train hurtles toward its conclusion with the speed of a runaway carousel.
